Where is God?
Our ancestors lived peacefully, enjoying a strong connection with God. When they prayed, God listened and intervened. You may have seen evidence of this in the lives of your parents and grandparents, or heard stories of God’s blessings and miracles in earlier generations. However, divine intervention seems less common today. Unlike our ancestors, many of us struggle with a lack of peace, grappling with anger, depression, and countless other problems. Even our children are affected. Why is this the case?
One reason may be our departure from the values once held sacred. As it says in 2 Maccabees 4:15, ‘Disdaining the honours prized by their ancestors and putting the highest value upon Greek forms of prestige,’ we often discard the beliefs and traditions of our forebears, labeling them as old-fashioned, and instead embrace new philosophies and ideologies.
Our ancestors upheld the sanctity of marriage and life, where sin was not tolerated. Today, these values are often sidelined; marriage is undervalued, cohabitation is encouraged, and life is not sanctified as abortion becomes more accepted. Even Christians have drifted from biblical values toward the allure of modernity. As 2 Maccabees 4:16 warns, ‘For this reason, heavy disaster overtook them, and those whose ways of living they admired and wished to imitate completely became their enemies and punished them.’ If we adopt the ideologies of the modern world, they may eventually turn against us, leading to consequences that could impact us and our children, potentially resulting in broken families.
Let us be thankful that we can still receive the Word of God rather than being led astray by new ideologies. Let us also seek forgiveness for any instances where we have chosen the ways of the world over the Word of God.
