In today’s world, with so many varieties of social media platforms, we are constantly bombarded with articles, videos, and messages. Among these are often negative news about individuals, gossip about priests, celebrities, institutions, ministries, and organisations. When we receive such messages, it is a natural human tendency to share them widely and unthinkingly—sometimes even without reading them completely.
However, before you share any messages or articles—whether they concern a priest, a celebrity, an individual, or a ministry—pause and reflect on the Word of God:
Sirach 11:7: “Do not find fault before you investigate; examine first, and then criticise.”
Do not judge or find fault with anyone simply because you received a message or article about them. Instead, take the time to investigate and examine the full story. Before criticising, ensure that you have conducted your own individual and independent investigation. And even when you criticise, do so with the intention to correct, not to destroy or defame the person. Our goal should be to encourage and uplift others, helping them walk in holiness.
Take a moment to examine your conscience. Have you ever shared messages, articles, or forwards without thinking twice or verifying their truth? Have you unintentionally contaminated the minds of others by spreading unverified information? If so, let us ask the Lord for forgiveness. With sincere repentance, the Lord will bless us and guide us towards greater discernment.
