Mark 1:1-8
In the time of the Old Testament, technology such as megaphones didn’t even exist, let alone microphones or mobiles! The message that Isaiah had written and that God states: “Behold, I send my messenger before your face, who will prepare your way before you; the voice of one crying in the wilderness, ‘Make ready the way of the Lord!’” (Mark 1:2-4) John the Baptist, was the man which the Old Testament referred to.
John the Baptist lived “in the desert, baptising and preaching.” He ate “locusts and honey”. He didn’t wear a suit while doing this righteous job but “he wore clothes made out of camel’s hair, with a leather belt around his waist” John had conversations with people near a river or a stream where he told people God will forgive their sins and baptised them with water.
John also told people to repent for their sins and beg for forgiveness from God. He also reminded them: “I baptised you in water, but he will baptise you in the Holy Spirit.” Jesus was the “he” to come.
We are baptised into Jesus by holy water. This is a major step, however Jesus would like us; his children to experience the fire of the Holy Spirit to radiate his love and word to everyone especially those who are in most need of God’s light.
Like John the Baptist, we are all called to share the good news about Jesus Christ, Son of God. Of course, we do not need megaphones or microphones to begin with, but just opening our mouths to spread the good news to our friends and family can be a wonderful start!
